I normally have my head buried in about 3 different books. Every couple of weeks I’ll post a list of what I’m currently reading and hopefully someone who has read one of them can share feedback, or I may encourage you to check one of them out.
Since Ramadan started I have put my reading on hiatus, but I plan to pick it back up next week. Right now this is what’s in my bag [or Kindle]:
The Treatise For The Seekers of Guidance: A translation and commentary on a classical text. One of the few English books on Islam that I’m actually enjoying reading (probably because it’s originally written in English instead of awkwardly translated). In any case, it’s a good book with general lessons and essential reminders.
The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working: One of those books I might not finish reading. The gist of it is to balance out different aspects of your life with work – making sure you spend enough time with family, eating right, working out, and so on. There’s nothing groundbreaking in it yet aside from the theory that our self control is a limited resource. For example, if you use up your “self control capital” to avoid eating an ice cream sundae, you might not have enough discipline left to exercise that evening. His solution is to “exercise” your self control the same way you exercise your muscles to continually build it up.
Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard: The book I started reading after getting bored with the above one. So far its awesome and it goes into the psychology of making changes. I’m not far into it, but so far it looks like a must for anyone involved in any kind of community work to read this book.
Wealth: Is It Worth It?: This is a really quick (and excellent) read, I read half of it on the plane so far and will finish it soon insha’Allah. I’m reading this as part of my self-study on personal finance. The author is the founder of Chick-fil-a (and obviously a cajillionaire), and writes on the place of wealth, especially as it pertains to those approaching money from a faith-based perspective.
